Bulldog Women’s Water Polo Takes on Tough Competition at UCSD Triton Invitational

The University of Redlands women’s water polo team traveled to San Diego for the UCSD Triton Invitational. Playing against Division I and NAIA opponents, the Bulldogs came up short and lost all four matches during the weekend.

In the opening game, Redlands faced off against #8 UC Davis, faltering 5-18. The Bulldogs gained two goals apiece from junior 2m-offensive player Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA) and senior 2m-defender Molly Todd (Sacramento, CA), while freshman driver Chandler Weeks (Palm Desert, CA) scored once. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Ellsworth (Napa, CA) and sophomore goalkeeper Whitney Schieler (Porterville, CA) split time between the pipes, making two saves each.

Later on Saturday, the Bulldogs returned to action and faced #10 Hartwick College. Again, Redlands struggled to defend the offensive prowess of its opponents, suffering a 7-16 loss. Greenawalt notched four goals while freshman driver Katie Stadius (Mercer Island, WA), junior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA), and Weeks added one apiece. Ellsworth posted seven saves while Schieler earned two.

On Sunday, the women’s water polo team faced off against the University of Maryland, who handed a 4-15 loss to the Bulldogs. Junior 2m-defender Jen Caron (San Dimas, CA) supplied a hat trick as Greenawalt scored once. Between the pipes, Ellsworth tallied five saves as Schieler made two stops.

Finally, in their best showing of the weekend, the Bulldogs competed against familiar NAIA opponent Cal Baptist University. In a hard-fought battle, Redlands came up short by a score of 8-11. Once again, Greenawalt led the team with three goals while junior driver Alex Haynes (Valley Center, CA), senior driver Alana Martinez (Riverside, CA), sophomore 2m-defender Tawny Rielly (Oceanside, CA), Caron and Todd provided one apiece. Ellsworth came up with seven saves for the Bulldogs.

The Redlands women’s water polo team (0-6 overall) looks forward to competing in the Cal Baptist Tournament on March 7 before heading to Thousand Oaks for the Cal Lutheran Tournament on March 8.
