Bulldog Women’s Water Polo Faces Tough Competition

The University of Redlands women’s water polo team competed in the Lancer Invitational on Friday, taking on Gannon University (PA) and Iona College (NY). On Saturday, the Bulldogs headed to the Cal Lutheran University Tournament to face off against Cal State Monterey Bay and UC Santa Cruz. Redlands gained its first win of the season by defeating Gannon and then suffered three losses with tight scores.

On Friday, the Bulldogs posted their strongest showing of the season with a 10-2 victory over Gannon in their first game of the Lancer Invite at Cal Baptist University. Leading the offensive charge, junior 2m-offensive player Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA) supplied six goals while junior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA) added two. Senior 2m-defender Molly Todd (Sacramento, CA) and freshman driver Katie Stadius (Mercer Island, WA) rounded out the scoring with one apiece. In goal, junior Lauren Ellsworth (Napa, CA) made 11 stops in the win.

Redlands then faced Iona in its final game of the invitational, suffering a tough 7-8 loss in overtime. Greenawalt again led the Bulldogs by scoring a hat trick while senior driver Alana Martinez (Riverside, CA) supplied two goals. Quinn and Todd posted one goal each in the heartbreaking loss while Ellsworth supplied 15 saves between the pipes.

The Bulldogs made the trip to Thousand Oaks on Saturday, participating in the CLU Tournament. The team competed well but suffered two tough losses, falling 7-9 to CSU Monterey Bay and 5-8 to UC Santa Cruz. Against the Sea Otters, Redlands relied on Greenawalt, sophomore 2m-defender Tawny Rielly (Oceanside, CA), and junior 2m-defender Jen Caron (San Dimas, CA) to score two goals apiece. In addition, Quinn offered one goal while Ellsworth made eight stops in goal for the Bulldogs. The final game of the weekend resulted in Todd and Quinn stepping up for Redlands, supplying three and two goals, respectively. Between the pipes, Ellsworth tallied 12 saves against the Banana Slugs.

The women’s water polo (1-9) team looks forward to the Claremont Convergence Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Games take place throughout both days at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer colleges.
