Redlands Women’s Water Polo Succumbs to CMS in Overtime

The University of Redlands women’s water polo team traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday to face off against the Athenas in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match. After tying the game in the fourth quarter with two goals, the Bulldogs came up short in the second overtime, falling to CMS, 7-8.

In a high-quality match, the Athenas held the lead for much of the game, going up 4-3 after the second quarter and then 6-4 after the third. The Bulldogs stormed back in the fourth quarter with a two-goal outburst to tie the game and send it to overtime. However, CMS pulled away with one goal in each overtime period while Redlands mustered only one score.

For Redlands, junior goalkeeper Lauren Ellsworth (Napa, CA) made 10 stops between the pipes. On offense, the team looked to a well-rounded scoring effort that included five different players. Junior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA) and senior 2m-defender Molly Todd (Sacramento, CA) provided two goals each while junior 2m-offensive player Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA), freshman driver Katie Stadius (Mercer Island, WA), and sophomore 2m-defender Tawny Rielly (Oceanside, CA) supplied one apiece.

The Bulldogs (5-16, 1-1 SCIAC) head to Occidental College on Saturday for an 11 a.m. conference match against the Tigers.
