Bulldog Womens Water Polo Suffers Heartbreak in Triple Overtime
The University of Redlands women’s water polo team headed
to Occidental College on Saturday for a Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match against the
Tigers. During the back-and-forth campaign, the Bulldogs came up
short in the sudden victory overtime period and suffered their
second heartbreaking loss in two games. Occidental out-lasted
Redlands by a score of 15-14.
In a very competitive match, the score remained tied at three
apiece after the first quarter. Occidental held a one-goal
advantage at the half but Redlands stormed back with three scores
compared to the Tigers’ two, resulting in another even score.
The fourth quarter provided great excitement with both teams
enjoying an offensive outburst of four goals to send the game to
overtime. In the first extra period, the Tigers went up by two
goals, seeming to be in control of the game. However, the Bulldogs
fought back with three goals in the second period as Occidental
produced only one, forcing a third overtime period for sudden
victory. Unfortunately, the Tigers scored to end the game while
handing a tough 14-15 loss to the Bulldogs.
Redlands looked to senior 2m-defender Molly Todd (Sacramento, CA),
junior 2m-defender Jen Caron (San Dimas, CA) and junior
2m-offensive player Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA) to lead the team
with three goals apiece. In addition, junior driver Claire Quinn
(Fresno, CA) added two goals, while senior driver Alana Martinez
(Riverside, CA) and sophomore driver Jade Valenzuela (Indio, CA)
provided one each. In goal, the Bulldogs gained a strong
performance from junior Lauren Ellsworth (Napa, CA), who came up
with 13 saves.
The Bulldogs (5-17, 1-2 SCIAC) return home on Wednesday for an
important SCIAC match against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 7 p.m.
