Bulldog Womens Water Polo Suffers Third Overtime Loss
In its third overtime game in four outings, the University of Redlands women’s water polo team came up short against Cal Lutheran University on Saturday. After gaining a 4-2 lead, the Bulldogs allowed one goal too many during double overtime to suffer the 5-6 loss to the Regals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match at the Thompson Aquatic Center.
Redlands pulled out to a quick lead after two periods but then was shut out during the third as Cal Lu stormed back with two goals to tie the game. With both teams posting one goal apiece in the fourth period, the game headed to overtime. The Regals converted one opportunity in the first extra period, which proved sufficient as the Bulldogs failed to score in either overtime, resulting in a tough loss for Redlands.
The Bulldogs gained two goals apiece from junior 2m-offensive player Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA) and junior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA), while senior 2m-defender Molly Todd (Sacramento, CA) added one. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Ellsworth (Napa, CA) made 11 stops between the pipes.
The Redlands women’s water polo team (5-19, 1-4 SCIAC) looks to rebound on Wednesday with its final home game of the season. The Bulldogs host the University of La Verne at 5 p.m.
