Women’s Water Polo Rebounds with 8-4 Victory

Following three tough overtime losses, the Bulldogs bounced back with an 8-4 win over the University of La Verne on Wednesday as seniors Alana Martinez (Riverside, CA) and Molly Todd (Sacramento, CA) competed in their final game at the Thompson Aquatic Center. The win wraps up the first round of the conference round-robin and moves the Bulldogs into fifth place in the standings.

In the opening two periods, the Bulldogs took control of the game and garnered a 4-2 lead at halftime. However, a tough third period saw the Leopards put away two goals while shutting out Redlands to knot the game at 4-all. In the fourth quarter, the resilient Bulldogs battled back, burying four goals to earn the solid victory over the Leopards.

Junior 2m-offensive player Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA) led all scorers with six goals. Junior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA) and freshman driver Tory Haynes (Valley Center, CA) rounded out the Redlands offense with one apiece. Between the pipes, junior Lauren Ellsworth (Napa, CA) boasted 14 saves while sophomore Whitney Schieler (Porterville, CA) tallied two.

The University of Redlands women’s water polo team (6-19, 2-4 SCIAC) looks forward to the SCIAC Championship Tournament on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 25-27 at Cal Lutheran University. Redlands awaits the final seedings for the tournament as play concludes on Saturday for the other six teams in the conference.
