Womens Water Polo Rebounds with 8-4 Victory
Following three tough overtime losses, the Bulldogs bounced back
with an 8-4 win over the University of La Verne on Wednesday as
seniors Alana Martinez (Riverside, CA) and Molly Todd (Sacramento,
CA) competed in their final game at the Thompson Aquatic Center.
The win wraps up the first round of the conference round-robin and
moves the Bulldogs into fifth place in the standings.
In the opening two periods, the Bulldogs took control of the game
and garnered a 4-2 lead at halftime. However, a tough third period
saw the Leopards put away two goals while shutting out Redlands to
knot the game at 4-all. In the fourth quarter, the resilient
Bulldogs battled back, burying four goals to earn the solid victory
over the Leopards.
Junior 2m-offensive player Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA) led all
scorers with six goals. Junior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA) and
freshman driver Tory Haynes (Valley Center, CA) rounded out the
Redlands offense with one apiece. Between the pipes, junior Lauren
Ellsworth (Napa, CA) boasted 14 saves while sophomore Whitney
Schieler (Porterville, CA) tallied two.
The University of Redlands women’s water polo team (6-19, 2-4
SCIAC) looks forward to the SCIAC Championship Tournament on
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 25-27 at Cal Lutheran
University. Redlands awaits the final seedings for the tournament
as play concludes on Saturday for the other six teams in the
conference.
