Redlands Cross Country Shows Well at UCR Invitational

In a high-caliber meet comprised of private running clubs and NCAA Division I, II, and III schools, the University of Redlands cross country teams competed well at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday morning. For the women, the Bulldogs placed four harriers in the top half of the 5K race that included more than 220 competitors. The men also finished well with an average time of 26:52.36 for the 8K course.

The women gained a solid showing from junior Avery Kelly (Fort Worth, TX) who led the Bulldogs with her time of 18:47.40. Freshman Heather Mayer (Spring Valley, CA) followed closely behind at 19:11.80, which places her eighth on the all-time list at Redlands. Sophomore Stephanie Mera (Redlands, CA) ran a career-best time of 19:15.30 for 10th on the Bulldogs’ top-20 list. Freshman Katie Ostrinski (Riverside, CA) also provided an impressive time at 19:36.90, which earns her the 14th spot at Redlands. Sophomore Onesa Bowman (Pomona, CA) rounded out the Redlands’ scorers with a time of 19:52.30. The women averaged 19:21.16 at Saturday’s race and took 12th overall, defeating the likes of San Diego State University, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Bakersfield, and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

For the men, freshman Jeremy Kalmus (New Orleans, LA) led the Bulldogs to their 11th-place finish with his time of 26:17.60. This puts him 17th all-time at Redlands. Senior Chris Smith (Fremont, CA) came in just seconds behind him at 26:27.00 while senior Rey Ramirez (Carlsbad, CA) posted a time of 26:52.90. To round out the team’s scorers, senior Raul Sevilla (Downey, CA) completed the course in 27:11.40 and sophomore Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH) came in at 27:32.90.

The Bulldogs now look forward to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Multi-Dual meet on Saturday, October 13, at Prado Park in Chino. The race begins at 9 a.m. with the men, followed by the women at approximately 9:45 a.m.
