Bulldog Cross Country Heads to NCAA West Regional

The University of Redlands men’s and women’s cross country teams look forward to competing in the 2007 NCAA West Regional on Saturday at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon. All 20 teams from the region will be represented at the event. The first and second-place teams, along with the next seven individuals, will earn a spot at the NCAA Championships in Northfield, MN.

Earlier this season, the Bulldog women finished third in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) as junior Avery Kelly (Ft. Worth, TX) led the team with a time of 23:11.53 for fifth place overall. Joining Kelly on the All-SCIAC First Team, freshman Katie Ostrinski (Riverside, CA) posted a 10th-place finish with a time of 23:41.63. Redlands also gained top-20 performances from freshman Pilar Page (Las Vegas, NV) and sophomore Stephanie Mera (Redlands, CA), gaining Second Team honors.

As of the October 30 poll by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA), Redlands sat at #10 in the regional rankings.

For the men, the Bulldogs earned a third-place finish at the conference championship meet, with senior Chris Smith (Fremont, CA) gaining a spot on the First Team with his fifth-place time of 27:08.92. Senior Raul Sevilla (Downey, CA) and freshman Jeremy Kalmus (New Orleans, LA) followed at 15th and 16th-place, respectively, to land on the Second Team.

In 2006, Kelly placed third at the NCAA West Regional with her time of 22:34.53. Smith finished 12th in the men’s event with a time of 25:39.55.
