Mens & Womens Cross Country Competes in UCI Invitational
The men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled
to nearby UC Irvine on Saturday for their first meet of the 2007
season. Redlands fared well with strong times during this
challenging meet that included over 120 women and nearly 200 men
from various schools, including Cal Poly Pomona, Southern Utah,
Pepperdine, and Loyola Marymount University.
For the men, the Bulldogs saw senior Raul Sevilla (Downey, CA) led
the charge with a time of 27:36.30 over 8,000 meters. Freshman
Jeremy Kalmus (New Orleans, LA closely followed him at 28:00.70.
Senior Chris Smith (Fremont, CA) and sophomore Jake Baechle
(Aurora, OH) provided the next-best times at 28:32.40 and 28:34.50,
respectively. Finally, freshman Alec Fillmore (Riverside, CA) came
in fifth among the Bulldogs with his time of 28:51.10.
The women gained another strong performance from junior standout
Avery Kelly (Ft. Worth, TX), who completed the 5000-meter course in
19:25.80. Sophomore Stephanie Mera (Redlands, CA) finished just
seconds behind her at 19:49.70 while freshman Heather Mayer (Spring
Valley, CA) posted a time of 20:01.70. Sophomore Onesa Bowman
(Pomona, CA) tallied a time of 20:38.30 while freshman Katie
Ostrinski (Riverside, CA) came in at 20:38.30 in her college debut.
Redlands was the only Division III school that competed in this
heat of runners, finishing ahead of UNLV, CSU Bakersfield, and CSU
Northridge.
The Bulldog cross country program looks forward to hosting the
Redlands Invitational, which is the only home meet of the season,
on Saturday, September 15, at 8 a.m.
