Both Cross Country Teams Take Fourth at Redlands Invitational

The University of Redlands cross country program hosted its first and only home meet of the 2007 season this morning as nine teams competed in the Redlands Invitational. With consistent results between both team, the Bulldogs captured fourth place in the women’s 6K and the men’s 8K.

Leading the charge for the women, junior Avery Kelly (Ft. Worth, TX) took seventh place overall with a solid time of 23:35.5. Sophomore Stephanie Mera (Redlands, CA) closely followed with her time of 23:49.9 to earn ninth place. Redlands also gained strong showings from freshmen Heather Mayer (Spring Valley, CA) and Katie Ostrinski (Riverside, CA), who posted times of 24:21.4 and 24:44.0 for 14th and 18th, respectively. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ results, sophomore Onesa Bowman (Pomona, CA) came in 26th overall with her time of 25:01.3.

For the men, Redlands saw continued success from senior Chris Smith (shown in photo; Fremont, CA) as he came in sixth overall with a time of 26:53.7 as the top Bulldog harrier. Freshman Jeremy Kalmus (New Orleans, LA) provided a solid time of 27:31.4 for 22nd overall while senior Rey Ramirez (Carlsbad, CA) came in 31st with a time of 28:01.2. The top-five runners for Redlands also included senior Raul Sevilla (Downey, CA) at 28:10.7 and sophomore Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH) at 28:59.2.

As a team, Cal Poly Pomona earned first place for the women while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the men’s competition. Individually, Alicia Freese from Pomona-Pitzer Colleges took medalist honors with her time of 22:47.4 and Chris Gurney from CMS won the men’s race with a time of 26:16.8.

The Bulldogs next compete at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 29 at 7:30 a.m.
