Bulldogs Compete in Redlands Cross Country Invitational

The Bulldogs hosted the 2009 Redlands Cross Country Invitational today at the University of Redlands with a multi-terrain course that covered the quad in front of Memorial Chapel as well as nearby Sylvan Park. The field of competitors included various schools from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) as well as NAIA opponents, junior colleges, and independent clubs from the area.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges captured both team titles while the Redlands women finished third and the Bulldog men took fifth place.

Individually, the women’s 4500m race was won by freshman Phoebe Merritt from Occidental College while sophomore Eric Kleinsasser, also from Occidental, took home medalist honors in the men’s 6K race.

For the Bulldogs, junior Katie Ostrinski (Riverside, CA) paced the women with her time of 18:30 for 17th place, which was followed by senior Stephanie Mera (Redlands, CA) at 18:31 in 18th place. Ten seconds later, freshman Madison Smith (Redlands, CA) crossed the finish line for 21st place while junior Heather Mayer (Spring Valley, CA) posted a time of 18:42 for 22nd place. Rounding out the Redlands scorers, senior Kelly Luck (Boulder, CO) came in 27th overall with her time of 18:52.

The men looked to senior Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH) to lead the team with his 22nd-place time of 20:16. Junior Jeremy Kalmus (New Orleans, LA) quickly followed at 20:18 for 23rd place. Sophomore Duncan Ashby (Goleta, CA) posted a time of 20:45 for 36th overall and junior Alec Fillmore (Riverside, CA) came in at 20:59 for 47th.
